The Ministry of Education and Youth is the arm of the Government of Jamaica with responsibility for the management, administration and policy direction in all public schools in Jamaica. Its mission is to provide quality education and training in a caring, inclusive and enabling environment to engender sustainable development. Our vision is to create a globally competitive and innovative education and training system producing an informed, socially conscious and empowered citizenry.
The Ministry continues to ensure that both teachers and students are adequately prepared for learning in the 21st century, and as such, continues to provide in-service training for teachers. In recent years, teachers have been equipped with laptop computers and schools have been provided with free access to e-books and broadband Internet service. Additionally, the Ministry has partnered with Microsoft in making 500,000 Microsoft 365 licences available for both teachers and students.
The Ministry continues to enjoy partnerships with a number of private sector entities that provide infrastructural support and social and educational resources to schools across the island.
The Ministry is led by the Minister of Education and Youth, the Honourable Fayval Williams, and supported by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kasan Troupe. The Ministry’s role of effectively managing the education system is accomplished through the execution of functions carried out by its divisions and agencies.
